You will need to need to address the specific tasks set both for strategy and for operations management.

You are given a sector area/industry to explore, from that select a company that interests you - one that has good data on it would help and you can obtain it. If the sector you are given also has multiple sub-sectors, then you may wish to focus on one of those. Bear in mind that the analysis you undertake will include an appreciation of the sector.

Task 1:

You will need to carry out research into the industry and company using library data bases, like Mintel, industry reports, analyst reports, newspapers/news channels, financial data, and government statistics to help assess the current position and possible changes.

'Market characteristics' relates to the bigger picture of the sector you are looking at - the size and shape of that sector's market e.g., how big is it, what is the general trend (growing, shrinking, staying the same), the number of different competitors in that market, who are the leaders, typical profit margins, and so on. The Johnson et al text offers insights. And, if you review the global advertising case you were given for Workshop 1 you will see that that is very much describing the characteristics of that market.

You will of course be discussing and evaluation the suitable models to some degree in task 1, this is then allowing you to select and apply /populate with live data and analysis in task 2. You will not be able to use or apply all of these models. Some will be a better fit with the situation and company. Justify which you will use.

Task 2:

You will need to identify and apply the key data for these tools in current situation analysis: I.e. key drivers for change -PESTEL, and Industry structure 5 forces as well as the internal strengths and capabilities + Value chain, culture and stakeholder analysis, competitor analysis before pulling together in a basic SWOT/TOWS. This creates new objectives.  This then leads to strategic choices i.e., one of Porter's -three generic strategies selection or Bowman’s strategy clock, Ansoff's grid. O,r perhaps merger or acquisition.

At the corporate level you could decide which SBUs (Strategic Business Units) to grow, maintain or divest from. GE Matrix portfolio tools.  Note: At the SBU level you can use the BSG grid too.

You should evaluate your choices with the SAF model. Suitability- does it fit the market /needs; will it be acceptable to the stakeholders? And will it be Feasible -can we resource it and do it in the time frame-capabilities and operations.

Implementation:

Then you must suggest way to lead and manage change of direction including possibly the culture.  How well has the company done this-what should they do?

Operations focus:

This then leads into medium-short term goals and actions (functional plans) to manage operations, hence Tasks 3 and 4 build on Tasks 1 and 2.

In Task 3 you need to determine whether the current operational business model adopted by the company aligns with the overall corporate, business and marketing strategies. If not, you need to offer and justify an alternative.

Task 4:

Now building on Task 3, for Task 4 you need to suggest a high-level change management plan to either reengineer the existing business processes or improve them.

N.B. Key models and /diagrams do not attract any word count in the limit of 1000 words per task. However, use judiciously – make sure they add real value and where necessary are populated with up-to date relevant data. Suitable explanation may be needed on the model and on any data interpretation.

The Johnson et al. book is excellent for strategy. 'Operations Management' by Hill and Hill and ' Operations and process management' by Slack and Brandon-Lewis offer strong insights on operations management. The texts we suggest offer strong detail, but we emphasise the more pragmatic google and library sources available to add to the slide/lecture materials as an overarching superstructure.
