It is basically a combination of different components used to create an entirely new product. The origins of this word can be traced

Manufacturing is the processing of raw materials to make something new.

It is basically a combination of different components used to create an entirely new product. The origins of this word can be traced back to 1683. With the word being derived from the Latin words manus, and facere, meaning hand and to make respectively.

However, in the modern times, as explained previously. Manufacturing is referred to as the making and producing of products and materials by using different components together and building/ creating an entirely new product. It is usually referred to as this where large scale operations and production is concerned, thereby, ensuring that the end product can be produced in large quantities.

When a raw material is processed it undergoes change, and when one raw material is combined with another, a new product is formed. Once the final product is complete, it has a specific market value . Which is usually much more than the cost of all the materials combined to produce it along with the overheads and other manufacturing costs associated with the production of that particular product.

In this manner, a product is created which not only offers value for money for the customers, but also offers immense profit for the producer as well. There are many organizations which are known for manufacturing, however, these days most of the manufacturing operations are outsourced to countries where the cost of production is considerably lower, thereby, earning greater revenues from economies of scale, while also making use of lower costs.

History of Manufacturing

The history of manufacturing is quite an interesting process. Where initially products were made by hand, to the point where more and more people were taught the skills required to produce the items in larger quantities, it was eventually taken to the point where machines were introduced to produce for them. This happened when the industrial revolution changed the world.

In the 18th century, the era of the Industrial Revolution began, which eventually spread far and wide along with the neighboring countries if Germany and France. The manner in which the products were manufactured changed drastically. Industries like textile, glass, mining, and agriculture had undergone an immense change. While previously textile products were hand woven and hand spun, spinning wheels and looms were invented. Which made the cotton production process much easier and smoother. This greatly helped in reducing the time required to produce one product while at the same time significantly reduced the costs related to production. What is interesting to note is that with the introduction of different types of machinery.  The process improved and people learned to use the machines, which made the process easier for them.

Eli Whitney

The materials that were produced were not only cheaper, but also greater in number. This increased the demand for further manufactured products. The supply on the other hand was low, due to which in 1833, certain laws were introduced to protect the rights of the workers.

However, before this happened. Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, which allowed cotton to be cleaned far more effectively and efficiently. This way the supply of cotton was increased.  As the farmers were able to provide greater quantities with ease. In turn this raw material became the highest exported product of America.

After a couple of years, Whitney was hired by the governed of the United States of America to make thousands of guns, whereas, previously, they used to be made by hand. Whitney came up with a way which allowed the guns to be produced quickly and cheaply. By using interchangeable parts and leading the country towards mass production. Eventually, many other factories started using and implementing his ideas.  Until the nation’s productivity levels sky rocketed.

Many of the business leaders used these machines to meet the increased demands for further processed products. Which thereby, increased the demand for raw materials even more. The revolution that had come, had its consequences, and many of the machines that Whitney made transformed the manner in which products were manufactured previously. He introduced the concept of mass production to the farmers.  Which was eventually copied by the factory owners as well, and Whitney was tasked with the development of many other machines that could mass produce products in order to meet increasing demand of the customers.

Thermoplastics and Thermosets

Thermoplastics are those materials that can easily be molded and shaped into anything that a person likes. The official definition is, “the material that softens. When heated above the glass transition temperature or melting temperature and becomes hard after cooling is called thermoplastics.” (NPTEL) They have a special property which allows them to melt when heat is applied to them and similarly allows them to solidify when they are exposed to cold temperatures.

Thermosets on the other hand are those materials which are rigid in their structure. The property of material becoming permanently hard and rigid after cooling when heated above the melting temperature is called thermosets (NPTEL). When a thermoset is heated, it only results in chemical decomposition instead of transformation into a different state.  This means that while thermoplastics can be recycled, thermosets cannot. The molecules of the thermosets are linked together to the point that they are unbreakable.Unless intense temperature is applied to them, and even then, it only decomposes, instead of being transformed in its previous state.

These are some of the differences between thermoplastics and thermosets, as these two differ in terms of properties and molecular structure. It must be noted that there are plenty of materials out there which fall under the category of thermoplastics and thermosets. Many of the polythene bags that are manufactured are thermosets as they cannot be recycled.
