Phase Three: Reflect After Reading
- The chapters “Language and culture” by (author name not available) recognizes that language is an important part of a culture, and the effect of culture to a given language is intrinsic and indispensable (Language and Culture). In this regard, different people communicate differently in different contexts. Therefore, there is a need for the speaker to take caution of the speech because how is delivered is essential as it determined the perception and interpretation by the receiver.
- I was surprised to learn that misinterpretation of speech is a common issue in communication. How it was said and who said it to who matters the most.
- Misinterpretation in language is a result of language ambiguities which can be created in the process of making a speech like in the case of Denny and Audrey (“Language and Culture,” p. 121). The perception of a message also depends on the communicating parties, that is their values, beliefs, and attitude towards each other. I am left wondering how different people are misquoted out of context for not being careful with their language use or not being mindful of how others might interpret their word use. The text enlightens me on language use and how to make communication effective. However, I have an unanswered question about how different moral values in different groups impact on speech.
