In the 1760s, American colonies used to be governed by Britain. Who lost a lot on money in the French and Indian War. In order to pay for those increased costs and earn back the money lost.  Britain passed laws in which the American colonists had to pay taxes on sugar, tea, and other things. Which resulted in protests by the people of the American Colonies (Chahrazad, 2015).

As a result of the protests and the resulting riots, the First Continental Congress session was held by the colonists in the year 1774  Which discussed the ways in which Britain should employ fair and just methods for treating the colonies. However, all this was ignored by the Britain, who sent in their troops to bring order. In order to fight these troops, the colonies organized their own army, and thus the resulting civil war is called the American Revolution. The colonials were broken down into two groups.  Those who wanted independence and those who wanted to stay loyal to Britain. The former being called the Patriots, whereas the latter, was called the loyalists.

The most important being the fact that the settlers wanted the British soldiers to protect them from attacks by the French army.  Along with the American Indians and the Spanish. As they feared them, and Britain used to spend money in order to help them.  Hence many people became part of the loyalists group (Florida Studies, pg. 114).

However, the colonies wanted independence from Britain rule, and after two years of fighting.  The Declaration of Independence was written in 1776.  Which declared that the colonies were finally free from the rule of British oppression.
