Thornton and McRobbie argue that ‘[i]n original moral panic theory, “society” and “societal reactions” were monolithic and … ultimately functionalist. Similarly Hall et al. … perhaps over-state hegemony and overlook the counter-discourses from which they drew and to which they contribute. In the 1990s, when social differentiation and audience segmentation are the order of the day.  We need to take account of a plurality of reactions, each with their different constituencies, effectivities and modes of discourse’ (1995: 564).

1.Briefly explain Thornton and McRobbie’s criticism of original moral panic theory.  Focusing in particular on how it viewed ‘society’ and ‘societal reactions’? Because this is a short essay, you can focus on Critcher (2008), Cohen (1972) or Hall et al. (1978).

2.Evaluate their criticism in relation to three media articles on a chosen case study and tell us whether you think, in light of this evaluation.  That moral panic theory does indeed hold a reductive view of society and whether you think it remains useful when exploring particular social events.

This is a short essay that will assess your critical reading of two academic pieces and your application of these pieces to an examination of 3 media articles on a particular event. No additional research is required, although it may be useful to think about the increasing diversification of media platforms since moral panic theory was first articulated in the 1970s.

Academic articles: you must cite Thornton and McRobbie (1995) in addition to one of the following: Critcher (2003), Cohen (1972), or Hall et al. (1978). Note, there are many editions of Cohen and Hall et al. Citing any edition of their original work is fine.  社会学概论essay代写

Media sources: Choose an event that could be considered a moral panic (note: you cannot do the same event for your major essay)

You can explore a case study we look at in class, but you need to find media sources independently—i.e. don’t use media sources that have been cited in the lecture, workshops, or the required readings

If you would like to choose another case study.  The further reading lists for each week will be a good place to start.  As will keyword searches using ‘moral panic’ (+ events or issues you are interested in).

You need to use at least one source from a traditional print media outlet (eg The Australian or The Advertiser which you can source online via the Barr Smith Library) . But you are free to use online or social media (found through web searching) as well.
